Celebrate Spring on the Oregon Coast!

March 2016

Fun spring activities on the Oregon Coast are as varied and abundant as the marine life that inhabit our rocky coastal tidal pools.  Whether planning a family-friendly spring break vacation or a romantic getaway for two, the charming village of Yachats has an impressive offering of unique events to celebrate the beginning of spring.

The month of March is fantastically moody; giving us monster waves and sensational spindrifts, showcased amongst impossibly blue skies which provide counter-balance to the inevitable Pacific Northwest rains.   In the midst of nature’s finest drama, we also are treated to the first sightings of grey whales, as they begin their northerly migration from their breeding grounds in the warm lagoons of Mexico.   Coinciding with this migration is Oregon’s Spring Break.  Smiles and laughter abound, letting us know it is time to shake off the winter doldrums, and take delight in the awakening of a new season.

This group of eight performing members express themselves through a blend of traditional, modern and original rhythms, weaving an uncommon experience for all.

The Monmouth Taiko drummers will be performing from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Yachats Commons Multi-purpose room (W. 4th & Hwy 101), with a suggested donation of $10 at the door.

Spring Whale Watch Week

March 19 – 26, 2016

What could be more exciting than spotting grey whales as they embark upon a 12,000 mile round-trip migration?   During the winter months, grey whales breed and birth in the warm waters of protected lagoons in Baja California, Mexico.  Usually around the third week of March, these behemoths venture forth to the rich feeding grounds of the northern waters, where they will stay until they begin the return trip in late fall.  Out of an estimated 18,000 grey whales, approximately 200 will spend these months along the Oregon Coast.  We call these whales the resident greys of Oregon.  During Spring Whale Watch week, interpreters are stationed at prime viewing points along the coast, ready to help observers spot whales as they make their spring journey.  In Yachats, Whale Spoken Here volunteers are stationed at Cape Perpetua Visitor Center and at Cook’s Chasm Turnout from 10 – 1 daily.  For more information about the lives of grey whales, visit Coast Visitor.
