5 Things We’re Thankful For This November

“It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.”

– David Steindl-Rast

Gratitude is felt all year long, but Thanksgiving is often when we reflect and give voice to the cornucopia of blessings that make our daily lives fulfilling and joyful.  We would like to take a moment to share with you a few of the many things the Overleaf Lodge & Spa team is grateful for this year.

Our Guests

We are privileged to be able to help create and share life-long memories with our amazing guests. There are myriad reasons why people visit the Oregon Coast in general, and the Overleaf Lodge specifically.  It might be a family’s first visit to the rugged Pacific Northwest, or the first night of a newlywed couple’s life adventure, a treasured home away from home, or a much anticipated special occasion.  We have smiled and laughed and toasted and cried with so many of our guests, and every employee has a special memory they can share, but we decided to see what our guests were writing about their Overleaf Experience in our lobby Guest Book.  We truly are blessed to play even the smallest role in so many stories.

We begin with an entry from the Creel Family, who recently gathered at Overleaf Lodge to celebrate the 107th birthday of Glenna Cramer, nee Creel.

October 19, 2016

“The Creel siblings have been meeting in Yachats for decades – first at the Fireside when it was new, then at Overleaf as soon as it was built.  Glenna (now 107) and husband Charlie came first.  Then Paul (now 99) and Nellie later invited Vaughn & Myrtle, Eleanor & Betty (now 88).  Charlie, Nellie, Eleanor & Vaughn are all gone now, but Paul & Betty continue to come twice a year at the magical place called Overleaf Lodge.  Now their children come also – their hair more salt than pepper now.  The tradition continues – hearts coming together in laughter & love.  And I’m certain Charlie, Nellie, Eleanor, Vaughn & Myrtle are here, too!”

“We’re enjoying the beauty of the Oregon Coast – our 1st visit!  Such a beautiful part of our country!  Celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary.” — Rog (Michigan) & Sue (Florida)

“My true love and I are now married and spent our 1st night of our honeymoon in a wonderful place – Overleaf lodge!  Thank you for the beginning of memories that will last a lifetime.  We will be back!” — K & C Colwell

“For me, the Overleaf has been a sacred space of rest, healing and retreat.  In October 2014 I came to the Overleaf for a 21 day vision quest/retreat.  It was absolutely amazing to “Be” in a sense of timelessness!  I came away forever changed in my sense of purpose in and on my life’s journey and my place in the Universe.  Each time I’m blessed to come visit this place…I am able to continue the sense of renewed energy.  I am enabled to take a better “Janie Ann” back to my family.  I am very grateful to the Overleaf staff and family for their excellent care.  Thank you.” — Janie Ann Snyder, Astoria

Our Employees

As obvious as it may be that we are thankful for our wonderful guests, we would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to express our gratitude for our hardworking employees.  Whether they have been here two weeks or 17 years, our diverse team brings passion, creativity, perseverance, diligence, compassion and humor to our properties every day of the year.  Working together individually, yet as a whole, our employees are there for one another and for our guests, whether in the form of a small gesture or a much needed helping hand.  As we gently begin to fall into the holiday season, we came together to celebrate, laugh and just enjoy one another, like families do. Overleaf Lodge continues to thrive in this “family” environment because of the hardworking, determined people who make up our workforce.  Thank you!

Storm Watching

Storm season has officially begun on the Oregon Coast and we know you want to have front row seats to the show!  The rugged, dramatic coastline of Yachats provides unparalleled views of giant waves crashing against ancient basalt rocks.  Yachats is home to some spectacular viewpoints to watch the age old clash between water and rocks, and this is something we are grateful to be able to share.  Perched above the moody Pacific Ocean, every room at Overleaf Lodge faces the water, giving you the ideal vantage point to view the pounding surf, while remaining warm & cozy in the comfort of your room. If you want to take it up a notch, from awesome to sublime, relax in Overleaf Spa’s soaking pool, high above the churning seas.

Paying Forward – Giving Back

As we look back and count our blessings, it naturally leads us to think about how we can pay it forward.  We are committed to helping our local community and our guests collaborate with us when it comes to giving.  This is the time of year when we launch our annual food drive.  In exchange for a discount on their room, our guests bring in canned food, which is then delivered to our local food bank, South Lincoln County Food Share.  Collectively, Overleaf Lodge and Fireside Motel were able to donate 10,344 pounds of food during the 2015-2016 year.  We send a big shout out to all who participated in providing local families with over 5 tons of food!

Community

Finally, we are thankful for the quirky, creative, and kind community of Yachats.  Our little “Gem of the Oregon Coast” has a population of about 700 people, but swells to over 4,000 in the peak summer season.  Our village pulls out all the stops; organizing festivals, live music, outdoor markets, guided tours, and an abundance of great customer service and good cheer!

As things wind down in late autumn, many of the locals begin reducing their business hours, taking vacations of their own, or looking ahead to sharing special moments with friends & family.  We take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation for the local restaurants who will be open and serving lovely, nourishing food this coming Thanksgiving Day.  Make sure to give one of these restaurants a call to reserve your seating in advance.
